Over/under: questions
- What does over/under mean in basketball?
- The bookmaker sets a line for the points both teams score together, for example 221.5. Over means the game finishes with more points than the line, under with fewer. Overtime counts.
- How is the projected total worked out?
- From each team's attack and defence ratings for this season, weighted toward recent form and adjusted for the opponents faced, and from the pace the two teams play at. Where bookmakers price the game, the projection is blended with their line.
- Why can the model's total differ from the bookmakers' line?
- The bookmakers' line also reflects where the money is going. The model only looks at the teams, so when the two disagree by several points, that gap is the reason to look at the game more closely.
- What does the percentage next to the pick mean?
- It is how often the model expects that side to land: 60% means a game like this goes that way about six times in ten. Under 55% is close to a coin flip.
- Are these picks free?
- The winner, the win probability and the projected score of every game are free. The side the model backs on each line, with its probability, is part of the Starter and Pro plans, and three games a day are fully unlocked for everyone.
